Spirit of the frontier Tours

Pilot DRAFTx Tour Series

For the pilot DRAFTx project, an avatar of DRAFTx founder Johanna Flato narrates five Texas landscapes with words borrowed from iconic destiny-commanding, horizon-striving, spirit-asserting men of history and literature.

By proxy of a roboticized avatar, Flato assumes the role of Columbia, the traditional personification of 'American Progress' and the 'frontier spirit'. As salesperson and docent, the avatar faces away from the scene and out towards the viewer, altogether disconnected — in disposition and often words — from the landscapes she purports to explain.
